Have you ever wanted to keep the peace with someone who wasn’t a huge part of your life anymore? You wanted the best for them if even if your relationship looked a little different? This is the story of “Burn this Bridge.” This song was written about 2 years ago with my good friends David Unlayao, Ryan Brisotti, and Claire Kellar. I remember walking into that write with a heavy heart as I was going through that exact situation. I had just gone through a breakup, and I would see this person around everywhere. Some days we could talk and it would seem normal, while some days the easiest thing to do would be to pretend like we never saw each other and look the other way. I hated that. All I wanted was for us to be able to make small talk conversation and feel like our history meant something. There’s a line in the song that is my favorite: “My side of town’s your side of town. If we light it up then we both go down.” I truly believe that even if people come into our lives for a small season, they help shape who we are. While sometimes it may be best to let go of people, I do think there are some situations where that person may just go on to play a different role in our lives. I think this is the heart of the song: we don’t always have the burn bridges with people we aren’t as close with. Perhaps an ex can turn into a friend and a best friend can turn into a friend we check in on from time to time. More than it being a breakup song, this is meant to exemplify hope and spread positivity. The world can always use a little more love.
